I recently had the pleasure of being invited to a tasting at the newly opened branch of The Sushi Counter in Business Bay.

Accompanied by my sushi enthusiast friend, we eagerly made our way to this trendy and vibrant establishment.

Conveniently situated in Bay Square, the restaurant is easy to spot, making it a convenient choice for diners.

The concept behind The Sushi Counter is to present sushi as a food on the go, rather than exclusively a fine dining option.

Inside, the eatery exudes a retro and urban charm, clearly hinting at its offering of a fusion of Japanese cuisine.

The interiors are bathed in natural sunlight, which filters through the glass windows, lending a refreshing and invigorating ambience.

To begin our culinary adventure, we ordered a sushi platter, quinoa salmon salad, and tuna ceviche.

As we eagerly awaited our lunch, the assortment of drinks stored in the fridge caught our attention.

Sushi Counter proudly serves a range of traditional beverages from both the UAE and Japan. Intrigued, we decided to sample the Asahi, a non-alcoholic beer, as well as the Dubai Cola with its delightful dates and honey flavour.

Despite their unconventional combinations, the drinks surprised us with their deliciousness.

Before long, our food arrived, starting with the salad and ceviche, which offered a remarkably refreshing taste. We relished every bite of the appetizers before moving on to the sushi platter.

The platter boasted a delightful assortment, including salmon avocado California rolls, crab avocado California rolls, shrimp avocado California rolls, and tuna summer rolls.

The presentation was visually appealing, and the flavours were even better. We savoured every single sushi roll on the platter, which, despite their modest size, proved to be satisfyingly filling.

We were also tempted to try the sushi burrito, a fusion of a burrito and sushi, which offered a sizable and convenient takeaway option for those in a hurry.

Moreover, the restaurant caters to vegetarian preferences, offering a range of captivating fusion choices.

Like many sushi aficionados, we understand that indulging in this delightful delicacy can become an expensive habit. However, what sets this restaurant apart is its competitive pricing, making it an attractive option for sushi lovers on a budget.

Before delving into the dessert we had selected, I had the opportunity to chat with the head chef, Rafael Jonas.

When asked about the best-selling item on the menu, Chef Jonas enthusiastically recommended their Californian maki rolls. We wholeheartedly agreed.

According to the chef, their signature street-style sushi fusion dishes, such as sushi nachos, sushi burgers, and sushi burritos, are rapidly gaining popularity among diners.

Finally, our dessert, the coconut snowballs, arrived. These delectable treats consisted of dough balls filled with custard, offering a uniquely textured experience that served as a perfect conclusion to our exceptional sushi lunch.

So, if you are seeking a casual and enjoyable hangout spot with friends or simply craving excellent Japanese cuisine, make sure to visit any of The Sushi Counter’s six branches strategically located at various locations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
